A MESSAGE FROM THE
SENIOR INSTRUCTOR
In our Karate training we are all at different levels.
Even though you can have a class full of blue belts
you can see that each blue belt is different in their
ability. The bottom line is they are all still blue belts.
It does’nt mean that they don’t deserve to be blue
belts. I have heard so many times in the past that
student A is better than student B or parents believe
that there child is better than the next child. On the
surface maybe we can see that karate standard
seems to be better but underneath it all there are
so many other factors to be considered. I would like
to give you some examples. As sensei we all talk to
each other about our students. One of the questions
that I do ask is how much has the person improved
over a period of time. Sometimes a student will train
hard at a viewing but when it comes to their normal
class they don’t train hard. It can come down to
the students attitude. If they be-little other students
or are disrespectful to their sensei then of course
they won’t progress. It might take them a little linger
even though their karate looks great. We are all on
a life long journey with Karate and we ALL need to
promote the great things that it promotes. It doesn't
matter if you are a Student,Parent or Sensei. You
don’t have to be great to start but you have to start
to be great.

SENSEI POINT OF VIEW
One step beyond the average
In Karate, we are often encouraged to apply the
lessons learnt in the dojo – hard work, persistence,
courage and self-belief – to our everyday lives. This
concept, whereby a lesson that we’ve learnt in one
situation is applied in a completely different situation,
is given the name Transference by Educational
Psychologists. Unfortunately, you may be surprised
to learn that a majority of good research suggests
that people aren’t actually very good at doing this!
It’s easy to imagine why. Sometimes it’s hard to
know how, why, or when to apply these lessons.
Perhaps, we may not be aware that we’ve actually
learnt the lesson. Or maybe, we are simply too lazy
to bother! As Karateka we need to understand that
normal, human imperfections can get in the way of
our desire to harness what we learn in the dojo for
use in our everyday lives. However, it should not
be the desire of any Karateka to be grouped with
the 90 percent of people who are aren’t very good
at Transference! Every time you put on your Gi
you take on a mission to go one step beyond the
average, to step out of the ordinary, the standard,
and the regular. We are not trying to be part of
that 90 percent because we make a conscious,
concerted effort to do better. So be aware of ways
you could be letting yourself down in transferring
the lessons learnt in the dojo, know that it’s normal
for most people, but most importantly, make a firm,
committed and personal decision to go beyond what
is simply ‘normal’ and be better! A Karateka knows
that their art is far more than what they do in the
dojo each week. It is a commitment to hard work,
persistence, courage and self-belief both within
and - perhaps even more importantly - outside the
dojo as well.

EXCUSES
“I’m too old”. I really started karate as something to
spend time doing with my boys. I felt that at my age I
was too old for this stuff. If you explain any physical
problems you have, regardless of your age, your
sensei will help you get the most out of your training.
We have numerous students 40, 50, 60 and even
70+, some even train with their grandchildren and
have made great progress. Basically, most people
are afraid of trying something new. Step out of your
comfort zone. Once you take the plunge, you might
just surprise yourself. I know I did.
